San Francisco based studio One & Co have collaborated with the HTC design team in Taiwan has unveiled the new cell phone flagship product, the HTC Touch Diamond. The new handset is the latest addition to the company’s product platform which began with the launch of the HTC Touch in June 2007 and boasts an array of innovative features led by a 3D touch interface called TouchFLO 3D and enhanced web-browsing capabilities that enable one-handed zoom and panning navigation plus automatic rotation from a portrait to landscape view when the device is turned on its side. The irregular back facets are a trend we’ve seen in recent contemporary architecture and furniture providing a highly recognizable design element.

Marginally lighter and smaller than the iPhone at 4″ x 3″ x 0.44″ (102 x 51 x 11.33 mm) and 3.8 oz (110g) but with less screen real estate (2.8-inch v 3.5 inch), the HTC Touch Diamond is housed in an eye-catching brushed steel casing with faceted edges and includes a 3.2 megapixel optical auto-focus camera, 4 GB internal memory, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi 802.11b/g, integrated GPS and runs on the Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional operating system.

The HTC Touch Diamond will be available to European customers in June, Asia and the Middle East will see it later this quarter in and the North American and Latin American versions will be arrive in the second half of 2008.

Is it good news? I’m not sure, but cell phones will be allowed for using on planes. Henceforth Euro airspace has been cleared for flight.

The EC’s information, society and media commissioner, Viviane Reding, clarified this in a statement this week, noting: “Pan-European telecom services, such as in-flight mobile telephony, need a regulatory ‘one-stop shop’ to operate throughout Europe.”

What with Ryan Air, Air France and other airline operators planning to roll-out in-flight mobile phone services in the very near future, it comes as no surprise to hear that the EC is already warning mobile operators about excessive charges for in-air phone use.

Viviane Reding also warned mobile operators in a recent statement that: “We expect operators to be transparent and innovative in their price offerings. In-flight mobile phone services can be a very interesting new service, especially for those business travellers who need to be ready to communicate wherever they are, wherever they go. However, if consumers receive shock phone bills, the service will not take off.”

As for me I can understand all those who will benefit from cell phone access in the air, but it doesn’t seem worth the grating one-way chatter the rest of us will have to endure.

The drawings above, are Photoshop renderings, based on a device described in a recent Apple’s patent application, called “Dual sided trackpad“. It shows that Apple may indeed be working on a clamshell iPhone device. But with a twist.

The main idea with this device is to separate capacitive touch sensor array and the phone display into two separate units. Then put the touch sensor array on a translucent (transparent) panel, make this panel touch sensitive on both sides - top and bottom and connect them with a hinge.

That’s it. You’ve got you flip iPhone.

When device is closed, transparent touch sensitive panel is covering the whole display area and you’ve got your ordinary full multi-touchscreen iPhone.

When you flip iPhone open, you have a normal phone display and another side of the trackpad becomes multi-touch-active. Through it you control the phone:

If you want to dial a number, you can just draw it on a trackpad.
Or the rotational dial may appear on display, and you rotate it by sliding finger on a track pad.
In the open mode, the transparent trackpad can easily be made to display the standard T9 keypad and other symbols. That can be accomplished by making polarized number and symbol markings that can only be seen when the trackpad is open. Or they can be implemented as tiny LED’s.
When needed, you can keep both sides of the cover/trackpad touch-active at the same time. Thus having “six degrees of freedom” for control, and enabling 3D gestures on the device. Standard multi-touch gestures along “XY” axis on one side of trackpad, adding “Z” axis for the touch events on the other.
This dual sided trackpad approach can be applied to media player functionality as well. When media player mode is selected and cover is closed, it works just like iPod Touch does - media controls on the screen and you control it via touch/gestures.

Flip it open, and another side of the trackpad acts as a scroll wheel on a standard iPod and more.
