The History of Blackberry

by on Mar.31, 2011, under Blackberry

The release of the Blackberry Torch last year just confirmed in the eyes of many that Research in Motion, who develop and manufacture Blackberry phones, were moving towards a more consumer driven market than they had previously.

Blackberry devices had for years been thought of as the tool of the businessman, with great e mail and messaging services, plus fantastic storage. Now though, RIM are obviously not content with ruling this area of the market and want to take on companies such as Samsung and Apple in cracking the consumer smartphone market as well. The Torch is one of the few Blackberry phones to have a capacitive touchscreen and features many things, like social networking applications, that Blackberry have seldom had in the past. It seems that this plan is working as well with Blackberry proving far more popular with children and young people than it ever has before.
According to Russell Brateman, the marketing director at Phones4U; “BlackBerry has been steadily expanding from its original business heartland, and today is at least as much about a youth audience who are attracted to its social capabilities, BBM and its brand relevance. This makes for a great fit with Phones 4u, and due to our strong resonance with the youth market, Phones 4u sells more BlackBerry devices per store than other retailer in Europe.”

Additions such as a decent, five megapixel camera and better media features on the Torch have obviously helped the Blackberry Torch win a new army of fans and getting into the youth market is so important as many people stay loyal to one mobile phone manufacturer if they like how it works for them. Indications seem to show that Blackberry is changing its serious image and that it is changing it fast. Phones like the Blackberry Torch will almost definitely not be a one off and it will be exciting to see whether RIM can match their achievement in the future.

Check out more on the Blackberry Torch by visiting the Dial-A-Phone website.

iPhone Bests Blackberry with Communication Apps

by on Mar.30, 2011, under Blackberry, iPhone, Mobile Applications

Blackberry made a name for itself with its excellent messenger service, BBM, which allows users to IM for free regardless of where they are in the world. The iPhone is invading this territory as developers have created apps that allow a similar level of free communication through messenger and international conference call.

Long distance calls are becoming increasingly easy for iPhone users. A company called Powwownow has developed a conference call app which allows users to set up calls and chat with colleagues across the globe – the only fee associated with this is the cost of the call itself. Skype can also be used on iPhones: this allows users to pay for calls to landlines or make free ones to other Skype users. This service has recently incorporated the phone’s front-facing camera making it a legitimate mobile face-to-face conversation experience.

A number of apps have also replicated the service provided by BBM. PingChat is a free messenger system which works across iPhone, Blackberry and Android platforms; it gives users the chance to chat for free and send photos and videos across huge distances. WhatsApp works in a similar way and is also available on the iPhone and other smartphones.

These applications have significantly eroded one of Blackberry’s best selling points – iPhone users can communicate across great gulfs without having to pay a penny. This is reinforced by the excellent email features already built into the phone. It will be interesting to see how Blackberry responds to this challenge, and to find out whether people will begin to abandon the RIM product in favour of the ever fashionable iPhone.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

by on Mar.03, 2011, under Mobile models, Sony Ericsson

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a smartphone developed by Sony Ericsson and is the latest release of the Xperia branded series of smartphones. The phone is running on the Android operating system and uses Android 2.3, the latest version, otherwise called Gingerbread. It is the first ever smartphone that is PlayStation certified which means that it can play PlayStation games, and currently there are around 50 of them that have been ported for this phone.
The public got their first glimpse of the phone in February 2011 when it was showcased at the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Spain, though it will not be available for UK customers until 28th March.

The phone features a sliding section but rather than having a keyboard the slider is very similar to the PlayStation Portable Go (PSP Go). There are PlayStation type buttons along with a pair of touch-pads and other buttons. Naturally the phone also shares the same capacitive 854 x 480 pixel touchscreen as the Xperia X10.

The hardware is somewhat of an improvement over the X10. It uses the same Snapdragon processor which is clocked at 1GHz, buy in addition there is a dedicated graphics processer, the Qualcomm Adreno GPU and a faster memory. Otherwise the 5.1 megapixel camera and other features closely resemble the X10.
Certainly this is a smartphone built for the gamers market and although this is a niche, it is a very big niche and one that has been anticipating the launch of such a phone since 2006 when Sony Computer Entertainment filed a patent for one.

Ever since then there have been numerous official and unofficial leaks regarding the phone’s development. It seems that the project suffered a number of setbacks and at one time was actually cancelled. There were also some political setbacks and it took some time before Sony and Sony Ericsson were able to come up with a deal that both organisations were happy with.

Was it all worth the wait and the effort? Naturally only time will tell but so far it seems that for gamers the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play ticks just about all the boxes. head over to the phones4u site today to see all the new Sony Ericsson Xperia deals.

Brand new Samsung Galaxy S announced

by on Jan.18, 2011, under Mobile Phone Deals

Anybody out there astonished at how good the new Samsung Galaxy mobile phones have been recently? Well so have we! The Samsung Galaxy S has become hotly tipped as being the only mobile phone which can stand up to the likes of the HTC Desire HD and the biggy, the iPhone 4 and to be perfectly honest, it’s not very far behind just a few adjustments in some places then it should be at least on a level playing field and just recently we have now heard that details are surfacing about the Galaxy’s successor. The Samsung Galaxy S2.

If the Galaxy S2 does get the handful of changes that are required then like we said previously it will without a doubt be on a level playing field with the likes of the Apple iPhone 4 and also the HTC Desire HD, and judging from the early photo’s there’s a great deal to go off on a looks front, with its sleek and clean design and style and touchscreen buttons it has got some serious beef with the iPhone design so Apple better keep an eye out as the Japanese titans are pressing for a huge surge to the top level of the smart-phone charts!
Should you rather fancy one of the original Samsung Galaxy handsets you would then be best taking a look around on the high-street as there’ll most likely be some very good Samsung Galaxy deals about on the high-street.
